This project questions the way we interact with microbes and how new scientific research suggests that they have an impact on our health and that their absence can increase the risk of many illnesses. We inherit our first microbes in our mother’s womb. During birth, the baby passes through the birth canal, where the mother’s vaginal microbes have changed during pregnancy to give the child a perfect starter kit. Sounds like nature had a perfect plan to ensure that
humans get the microbes they need.
My bachelor thesis provides future parents with a ritual to give their child the mother’s vaginal microbes after a cesarean section, showing the possibility of giving children a healthy start with microbes. By preserving the vaginal microbes in oil, parents can pass them to their children during an emotional bath or massage. Additional information is included in the kit in the form of a booklet to communicate the importance of microbes.
